ISPON Annual Conference

The Professional Development Conference is an annual event organized by the Institute as part of the approach to celebrate professional safety practice in Nigeria. For the past 37 years, ISPON has gathered Safety Professionals from various fields of specialization to proffer solutions to the present day safety and economic challenges in the country. ISPON Conference is the best ranked and largest gathering of Safety Professionals in Nigeria. It is an event where people meet to brainstorm on real industry challenges, analyse issues, share knowledge from experience, discuss way forward and discover practical solutions which can be implemented in the day to day economic activities. More so, business owners, contractors, employers and job seekers have been taking advantage of this prestigious gathering to network and build relationships with the people they ever wished to meet. The last edition was held in Lagos in 2018 with the theme “Safety in an Emerging Economy.”

Owerri 2019

The 38th edition of the conference this year offers much more than what has ever been witnessed in the last decade, and it promised to be one of the best events in Nigeria. “Mainstreaming Safety for Sustainable National Development” is a theme that offers opportunity to critically x-ray the relevance of safety in business productivity, sustainability and national economic development. Through this conference, small and medium scale enterprises, as well as the multinational companies will better appreciate their investments in building and sustaining sound safety cultures. Ultimately, the nation at large will understand the place of safety in achieving a sustainable economy. Various professionals across Nigeria will deliver lectures on the subthemes, creating a unique opportunity to dive into their pools of experience. So much more to expect in this historical gathering.

Welcome to Owerri, the Heartland City

Know the City

Owerri is the capital of Imo State, one of the five south eastern states in Nigeria. The city, also known as Eastern Heartland is situated at the heart of Igboland, with major road networks linking Aba, Onitsha, Port Harcourt and Umuahia. Owerri is the biggest city in Imo State, with a population of about 1,500,000 and a landmass of 100 square kilometres covering its three local government areas. Arguably, this unique location of our 2019 conference is ranked as one of the cities with highest number of hotels in Nigeria, hence, the reason why it is often described as centre of entertainment in southern Nigeria. Generally, the people of Owerri are peace loving, appreciating visitors and ever willing to assist if need arises. The people are largely Christians predominantly Catholic and Anglican members.

Coming to Owerri

Owerri is served by Sam Mbakwe Airport which is about 14 miles (23 km) south of the city. The airport is served by Air Peace, Dana Airline, Aero Contractors and Arik Air line, offering daily connections to Lagos and Abuja. The city is also connected by road directly to Port Harcourt, Aba and Onitsha. Some major roads within the city are Douglas road, Wethral road, Port Harcourt road, Okigwe road, Orlu road, Royce etc. Once in the city, moving around can be by cab/taxi which you can either share with other passengers going the same route or take as a “drop” to your destination.

EatING in Owerri

You can find many common Nigerian foods in Owerri. The restaurant in your hotel or many others in the city will be able to assist you with available menu. “Ofe Owerri” meaning “Owerri soup” is a special delicacy in the city and you can spice up your visit if you order a plate. Remember to ask for it.

Things to Avoid

Many places in Africa have various things you will not be allowed to do. In Owerri and Igboland generally, killing of python is forbidden. Do not ask for snake meat in the restaurant. Also, you may not take anything from others using your left hand. This is not polite and it may constitute an offence even if you are a leftie. It is not also right to whistle in the night

                                          Preparing for the Conference

Early planning is an essential part of every successful journey, especially outside your base. This is recommended for you to have the best time as you visit this beautiful city. Although, Owerri is characterized by a tropical wet climate, the period of the conference falls within the dry season when precipitation has drastically reduced. A slight harmattan may be experienced in November towards the period of the event. Notwithstanding, you should not have any major challenge if you are already familiar with tropical climatic conditions. During your visit, having some extra money will be a good idea in case you are planning to tour round the city.
